Peace Messaging: Traditional Aroko Semiotics

The 1851 Aroko letters between the Awujale of Ijebu and Kosoko (the Eleko of Lagos)

Aroko - Otunba Payne
Part of the University of Aberdeen’s Pitt-Rivers collection, this series preserves eight original aroko letters sent between the mid- to late-19th century (approximately 1851-1887). The collection was assembled by John Augustus Otunba-Payne, a Yoruba clerk in the Lagos Supreme Court and publisher of a popular West African almanac.

Interpretation
"Among all the peoples who inhabit the four corners of the world, the Lagos and the Ijebu people are the closest. As Ayo Opon is a common game in the country, so should the Ijebus and Lagosians always play and be friendly with each other. Mutual goodwill is my desire — as it is pleasant with me, so may it be pleasant with you.

Deceive me not because the spice would yield nothing but a sweet and genuine odour. I shall never be untrustworthy in dealing with you."

  • Context: The quote highlights a message encouraging continued friendship and close ties, comparing their relationship to the common, friendly nature of the Ayo Opon game.
  • Historical Significance: The 1851 letter reflects a period of diplomatic communication between the two kingdoms in southwestern Nigeria.
  • Relationship: The Ijebu and Lagos people are closely related Yoruba groups, with significant cultural, historical, and geographical connections.

The quote emphasizes, "As Ayo Opon is a common game in the country, so should the Ijebus and Lagosians always play and be friendly with each other".

Arokos, a traditional Yoruba system of communication using symbolic beads or strings, demonstrates remarkable linguistic efficiency by encoding complex messages—such as full speeches—within minimal physical arrangements. This highlights the sophistication of indigenous African communication systems, where meaning is deeply embedded in cultural context and symbolism. Otunba Payne’s translation underscores the importance of skilled interpreters in preserving and conveying such nuanced oral traditions. The ability to compress rich discourse into simple sequences reflects both advanced cognitive frameworks and a deep cultural heritage. - Anon.
